What3Words: The Simple Tool You Didn’t Know You Needed

Written by Connection Worx | Apr 20, 2026 9:42:22 AM

Ever been in that situation…

You’re waiting for a delivery, tracking says “out for delivery”, and then nothing turns up. Later you find out the driver couldn’t locate your address. Or maybe you’ve just moved into a new property and it’s not even showing up properly on Royal Mail systems yet. Or you’re trying to get equipment delivered to a field, a retreat, or somewhere that doesn’t really have a clear “address” at all.

It’s more common than you’d think… and it’s exactly the kind of problem What3Words was designed to solve.

At its core, What3Words is brilliantly simple. The entire world has been divided into tiny squares, each measuring just 3 metres by 3 metres, and every single one of those squares has been given a unique combination of three words.

That means instead of vague directions or sometime unreliable postcodes (if the same one related to one side of a long road) , you can point someone to an exact spot on the planet using just three words.

Not a street… not a building… but the precise location you actually mean.

If only our three words pinpointed people to us.. Now that would have been brilliant Connection. Communication. Resilience.  but in our case Cotton Court is at lake.gent.wire shown as https://what3words.com/lake.gent.wire

Once you start using it, you realise just how practical that is. Deliveries become easier because you can guide someone to the exact entrance you want them to use, rather than hoping they find the right door. If you’re in a rural or hard-to-find location, it removes all the guesswork. And if you’re somewhere that doesn’t yet exist properly on mapping systems, it gives you a usable, accurate reference instantly.

It really comes into its own in places where traditional addressing struggles. Events in open spaces, retreats, pop-up locations, or anywhere “in the middle of nowhere” suddenly become easy to navigate. Instead of explaining landmarks and hoping for the best, you just send three words and people arrive exactly where they need to be.

Despite being around for years, it’s still relatively unknown, which is surprising given how useful it actually is. In fact, it’s not just helpful for deliveries and directions. Emergency services across the UK use it to locate people quickly when time matters and traditional directions fall short. That alone says a lot about how precise and reliable it is.

From a Connection Worx point of view, we’ve found it incredibly useful in ways people don’t always expect.

We’ve used What3Words to help individuals and businesses understand what type of connectivity might be available to them, even when they don’t have a formal postal address. By pinpointing an exact 3m x 3m location, we can assess whether fixed line services are viable, or whether a cellular-based solution might be the better route.

It’s also helped when working within larger buildings or sites, like schools or care environments, where knowing the exact area matters. Being able to reference precise locations allows us to think more carefully about things like WiFi coverage, equipment placement, and even how resilient connectivity should be designed. In some cases, it’s supported planning around ingress points and ensuring networks are built in a way that reduces single points of failure.

In a world where we expect everything to be fast, reliable, and connected, it’s surprising how often something as simple as location still causes problems. What3Words cuts through that with a simple idea that just works.

Three words. One exact place. No confusion.

It’s one of those tools you don’t think about… until the moment you really need it.

And when you do, it can make all the difference.
